Margie,
If we leave aside the Purgatorio, then my favorite line about Purgatory comes from the perfectly delightful movie Return to Me:
Old Italian Catholic Guy has just said something obnoxious
Old Irish Catholic Guy: Oh, you'll be a long time in Purgatory, you will.
Old Italian Catholic Guy: Well, I'll be with friends.

Darren,
You are right in remembering that he unquestionably had this gift of concise expression, which being the great philosopher that he was, was invariably turned to humor. He has often caused the celebrated saying to be attributed to him: "In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity."
We have as a rule a very good sense of humor, we have to, it's a pre-requisite to being Catholic nowadays! LOL!!!

Wasn't it St. Augustine who had so many *positive* things to say about humor and laughter?

I'm Catholic, but it is really funny. I'll see you in purgatory with the rest of the comedians. Maybe even the good Lord will take a trip there just for laughs.

Referring to beauty. I blogged on the subject myself.
On Beauty.
Also, see this photo of the Sanctuary of the Chuch in Holy Hill Wisconsin. This blog elicited a few comments.

Much better than the one I posted. I just had the Pope consecrating a mug of beer. The pretzel makes it perfect!
