Blogging To Differ at Pajamas OSM Media (UPDATED)
[Pajamas] Open Source Media Launch, Left to Right: Jeff Goldstein, Ed Driscoll, Glenn Reynolds, Larry Kudlow, Jane Hall, Roger L. Simon, Manuel L. Quezon, Michelle Malkin, Claudia Rosette, Charles Johnson, Clifford May, Michael Barone and Eugene Volokh.
Open Source Media (OSM) or until yesterday known as Pajamas Media are launching their site today amidst a great rumble of excitement in the Blogosphere.
Some incredible 70 blogger and journalist powerhouses have got together, led by Roger L. Simon and Charles Johnson from Little Green Footballs, who are the co-founders, and formed an aggregation of great quality blogs, providing an alternative to the mainstream media. Between them these two bloggers alone have had a staggering 53 000 000 page views since their blogs were formed a few short years ago.
Open Source Media has already signed up dozens of bloggers, including: the mighty Glenn Reynolds @ Instapundit, our liberty guardian Eugene Volokh @ The Volokh Conspiracy, the great conservative Michelle Malkin, Michael Totten, Daniel Drezner, the great blogger Ed Driscoll, my friend the Thomas Mann of the Blogosphere Jeff Goldstein @ Protein Wisdom, Iraq the Model, Eric Umansky, the wise and sharp La Shawn Barber, William Quick @ The Daily Pundit, the hunky Stephen Green @ Vodkapundit, the cool Juliette Ochieng @ Baldilocks Manolo the Anonymous Shoeblogger, and NRO contributor Cathy Seipp. The list lengthens almost daily, and the website is running occasional profiles of participating bloggers.
The powerhouse journalists include CNBC's Larry Kudlow, who is on the board, a regular on Fox News Jane Hall who is on the editorial board, Clifford May ex-Newsweek and NYT, who blogs for the National Review, Claudia Rosett ex-Wall Street Journal who now freelances for the Opinion Journal and National Review. Last but not least one of the best journalists today, Mark Steyn.
An internal instant-messaging system will link their correspondents all over the world. If there are any doubts about a report's veracity, they can call on the expertise of their editors instantly.
"These editors thus far include California-based freelance journalist Jill Stewart, Tennessee-based Glenn Reynolds of the ur-blog Instapundit, and Aussie columnist Tim Blair."
[...]
Isn't this all a little pie-in-the-sky, however? Who could imagine supplanting the venerable Associated Press wire service, for instance?
"We'd be foolish not to try," Simon replied, grinning toward Johnson. "You're sitting four feet away from the guy who ended Dan Rather's career."
I am sure they'll all get along just fine. Heh. Jeff Goldstein is liveblogging from the New York launch party today UPDATE: CHECK PARTS 1-4. Even though he has been accused by some of faking it and not being actually there. Ed Driscoll says: "Jeff is live blogging from his home in Colorado" LA Shawn Barber's Corner is live blogging too.
For some more check Kieran Healy @ Crooked Timber, Ed Driscoll, who will be constantly updating, as well as of course Roger L. Simon, LA Shawn Barber's Corner, Tammy Bruce: "This new coalition of bloggers, I contend, is the new face of media as the electronic helping hand of the New American Revolution." Bill Quick @ Daily Pundit who is as perplexed at the sour grapes as I am. Baldilocks Peak Talk Daimnation Belmont Club Glenn Reynolds @ Instapundit and Stephen Green @ Vodkapundit Truth Laid Bear, which is becoming a force to be reconned with.
Kevin Aylward @ Wizbang is keeping a watchful eye, still on the fence me thinks, and Ann Althouse is positively unimpressed, and crossing swords with Charles Johnson and his readers in the process.
Professor Bainbridge gets his frustration out, all clear the gangways. Blogging is a very effective therapy.
Don't miss Daniel Rubin who is on the scene with the latest scoop, giving us the mini-blogging version.
The Manolo gives us the 'Fashionista Angle'. Gorgeous Kristen @ Beauty Addict, who is a tender 24 year old blogger, was beauty live blogging as a part of a fashion panel with the talented Kim Weinstein @ I am Pretty New York City and the lovely Christa Weber @ Manolo's Never The Bride, and thought the political bloggers were rather dismissive. Well Kristen, I blog politics most of the time, although not exclusively, and I thought the fashion part was really good fun. So there you are, there is one person who enjoyed that part of the audio.
But the Blogosphere is not akin to a variety mix. They are still getting used to the photograph blogging on this site, heading current events and politics. Tres risque.....
The Hollywood Reporter quotes Rupert Murdoch, who says that the Internet is the "Most Fundamental Change During [His] Lifetime" I think Murdoch needs to fasten his seat belt, it's going to be a bumpy ride for him....but then he'll just have to get his fat check book out if sense prevails.
Don't miss the streaming live audio of the launch @ Pajamas Media and an UPDATE from Roger. Constant live updates from Ed Driscoll, and a mention of my photoshop composition featuring the OSM gang. Truth Laid Bare puts me in first place blogging the subject (constantly updated), and a great one stop linkage to all the blogs blogging the launch.
John Hawkins worries about the cost.
FURTHER UPDATE: HEH but HAH and the one who thought he did it first but better.
UPDATE: And finally the minority sourpusses spitting jealous venom. Enter at your own peril: Roger Ailies: "You won't find a larger collection of uninteresting wingnut blowhards..." and Greg @ The Talent Show who really lets it rip. Jeff Jarvis is being downright bitchy, sounding more like an old fishwife than a blogger. LA Shawn Barber thinks he is confused, but I doubt it.
Contributing editor of Vanity Fair James Wilcott who has his own blog, calls the OSM bloggers "windbags of war". Don't quite understand why the premature heavy artillery, but can only assume it can be to do with a lashing out at the growing might of the pushback which he believes to be greatly furthered by the OSM blogging conglomerate. More from him here.
I am amazed at the level of sour grapes in the comments sections of the sourpuss team. Using big words like "disingenuous" and "opinion elite", "bloggers eating their own" trashing the name, the business model, why did they need $3.5 mil....Wow there are there some serious venom spitting blog readers and bloggers out there that need some orientation in their perspective. Leading the pack of wolves is Pajama Media ex-partner turned critic, Dennis the Peasant who has a personal gripe, which he explains in the thread section of Jeff Jarvis' blog. I fear the only person to benefit will be his psychiatrist, and as he seems to say he has lost a lot of money on the OSM deal, it doesn't look very good for our little Dennis the Menace.
The OSM guys are still at the launch party stage for goodness sake, give them a chance, even if you attempt to trash their execution, which in itself is a farce as they only went live today, how can you trash the incredible talent they have gathered. I come back to the same thing.....sour grapes.
And then this endless discussion about how people are actually getting paid, wow, that's outrageous, I mean I think they should all be arrested for something, for anything....Give me a break, get over yourselves....
A PLEASANT UPDATE: Judith Weiss @ Kesher Talk, one of my intellectual heroes, has just tracked me back, for the photograph mind you, but I still live in hope....She has an array of very astute and humorous observations and is post party blogging having had a good time and some intelligent exchanges around the fireplace. A woman after my own heart, that's what I call a good time. To say anything else when you have a gathering of the best of the Bloggosphere, to me is just sour grapes. Thanks for the chilled update Judith. It takes simple confidence to admit to having a good time instead of attempting to score points in mindless rhetoric. Guys in the paragraphs above, observe and learn....
Atlas has photographs from The Last Supper, and stars in Jeff Goldstein's hilarious update no 3 (reading them all is a must, here here and here):
"Kind of a hairy moment during our exquisite catered lunch (just prior to Judith Miller’s keynote address on media shield laws, just after the flan and espresso service) when Vanity Fair contributing editor James Wolcott—posing as a “conservative blogger” (which, to his effete and Syrah-soaked mind, translated to tying on a camouflage-print ascot and lacing a pair of Timberland Canard Wapack Gauchos over his leg warmers)—tried to crash the OSM launch party.
For a flaccid, pinkish man-child with the loose-skinned jowels of a Churchil bloodhound, Wolcott, I must admit, put up quite a spirited fight—slapping his way past the NYU kid posted at the door and managing to gallop all the way to the sundae bar, screaming filthy John Cornyn limericks the whole way—before finally being sacked and wrestled to the ground by Tammy Bruce (who felled him with a brutal forearm shiver) and Pam of Atlas Shrugs (who wrapped his twitching bulk in her thighs like a ball python wraps a gerbil) until security could escort him kicking and biting out of the building.
Which, while the episode certainly livened up the proceedings, was hardly the best way to impress Senator Cornyn with our new, ready-for-primetime seriousness, I don’t think."
THE MOST PLEASANT UPDATE OF ALL, THE ANCHORESS IS ALSO A PART OF THE OSM BLOGGING ELITE AND I AM OVER THE MOON, THAT'S THE BEST NEWS EVER:
"No, I did not attend the launch. Aside
from the fact that I’d have to do it in a habit, with sunglasses and
wax lips, I frankly would not have had the energy to do a day in NYC,
just yet. It would have laid me out quite nicely in one of those
rose-and-cameo caskets that are so popular these days.
Yes, I am
a part of it but a “quiet” part, as is my want. I do believe my profile
will be next week or sometime in the future, and the rest will follow.
It is quite a nice thing to be a minor associate of some of these folk,
too."
The circle is complete.
UPDATE NOVEMBER 18TH: Brendan @ The Other Open Source is still griping on with a Part II of the saga of the name which he claims. Jeff Jarvis thinks it's all quite fishy. Ann Althouse is confused and quite rightly points out the inconsistencies. Kevin Drum @ The Washington Post thinks it's all very odd. David Burge @ Iowa Hawk is giving us an in depth amusing tongue and cheek analysis, more like foot in mouth, but still, very amusing. O.K. David just kidding.... Jim Lowney, the blogging photographer who has done some incredible work in Bosnia. Brave and talented PERIOD. Then the ever Astute Blogger who was impresed with the who's who. Clive Davis gives his last impression update, whilst Ann Althouse is still taking off the pajamas (your own words Ann, don't get grumpy with me I am just quoting you. You know I love you, read your blog, listen to your podacasts, make comments, fearlessly defend you, agree with most of what you say, make pictures of you as a Queen, am responsible for you being no1 on Google when inserting the words Laura Bush+Ann Althouse, and on and on. I'll stop now, someone just shouted "enough grovelling already"). Riehl World gives his take on the effect OSM will have on the Blogosphere. CBS News has just woken up. and the latest from Roger Simon who is trying to get some sleep after the all nighters of burning the midnight oil at OSM. Through Independent Sources we find Patterico who is now off the ledge and gives us the OSM press release from David Burge's tongue and cheek post:
"Open Source Media is a new multi-aspect business concept in which many of the top superstar and mega-hyper superstars of the internet blogosphere have formed a powerful alliance to create shareholder value, and piss off Ann Althouse. Heh"
Daniel Rubin @ Philly Blog reminds me that I've been calling Jeff Jarvis who is the creator of Entertainment Weekly an old fishwife for bitching about OSM so much (in his previous post), whilst appearing confused. O.K. it isn't only David Burge who needs to get his proverbial foot out of his mouth. O.K. Jeff hindsight gives you 20/20 and all that 'jazz'....I have however had enough of grovelling for one day. I am usually quite polite, well I said usually, unless we talk about Islamofascism.
UPDATE NOV.19TH: Dennis the Menace, aka Kenton Kelly, aka Dennis The Peasant has revived the ailing subject one more time of his unfair treatment by OSM Media. Here is Roger Simon's response.
Kelly, you remind me of Peter Sellers in the famous opening scene of 'The Party', where he is an extra who gets shot, and just refuses to die. It is the funniest scene in cinematography today, and you are simply ruining it for me."

Thanks again for stopping by my shop and nailing my unintended and unflattering ambiguity. I have fixed it. It is always a healthy thing to be shown that you don't write nearly as well as you think you do, and I need all the health in that regard that I can get.
Congratulations and best wishes to you and your OSM cohorts. I hope they spend the venture capital wisely and make OSM into a site that I will be both flattered and proud to disagree with completely.

I'm a good cook, but not if you are a vegetarian! We'd probably make you something like this. And we wouldn't talk politics at least until the Frangelico or dessert wine came out. We could talk about art, I guess, or science or dogs. Not blogs though. My wife thinks blogs are dumb. My dogs probably do too. *sigh*

Certainly, in my opinion, saying at the top of your voice I'm not including a link, is the best way not to include a link. Perfectly understandable.
For the record, I don't think I'm fighting anyone's battles. True, after reading Dennis the Peasant's last post my previous opinion on the whole matter did move a few yards in a new direction, but that just got me back to the middle. I wish everyone well.
I appreciate your taking the time to respond to my post.
Posted by: Howard | Monday, November 21, 2005 at 02:39 AM
Howard, I did link to him in the text earlier, but yes granted not the latest. I am just not a fan of fighting your battles this way, and I make no qualms about it. I don't simply not include the link, as Roger doesn't, I SAY I am not including it.
But yes, touched a nerve there, I guess that worked. I will put the link in the main text.

Anyway, for your perusal, here's the calmly told story.

What time is dinner then PINKO?
Posted by: Alexandra | Monday, November 21, 2005 at 02:06 AM
I thought your post and updates have been excellent. And though you obviously have a strong viewpoint, you've also been fair to the other side. But the fact you don't link Dennis the Peasant's last post on this subject, where he explains in great deal the whole history of his relationship with Roger L. Simon, but do link to Roger's thoughts on that same relationship, this strikes me as grossly unfair. Not bloggerly at all. And as someone who has enjoyed reading this site on occasion, sadly, I'm disappointed.
Posted by: Howard | Monday, November 21, 2005 at 02:05 AM
Someone doth protest too much. Everyone likes all this blog agita, including you. It felt good for you to tell me to "get a life" in many more than three words, didn't it? Considering you have a several hundred word post on the same topic I'm "obsessing" about, and the fact that we both have the free time to have blogs. If someone is full of crap, it's irrelevant whether I'm pseudonymous, they can still tell me what they think, I do have a web address, and an appelation with which I may be addressed. Unless you want to come to my house, then you wouldn't need my name, just my address, so it's unclear why you'd need my name to address any of my points. I would point out that I didn't insult you at all, I merely suggested that I found DtP to have the more credible story, and given your many-updated and highly commented upon post, it was just my two cents. There was nothing mindless or rhetorical about it. Two people give two versions of the same story, one appears credible, one does not. Seriously, why the reflexive taking offense? We're not here to make enemies. I'll even buy you a thesaurus so you can insult me more creatively, even if you did I'd always take the low road and go with poo-head anyway. I mean, I said RLS was full of crap, so calling him a cobag is essentially the same thing. I didn't call you anything, nor would I.
Sincerely,
P.I.N.K.O

Well Pinko, you finally found me, or should I say followed me, to do some more OSM bashing. What it must be like to be eating a bar of chocolate and see the OSM ligo in the background. Do you dream about it at night too? You need to see a shrink, some sort of a pschycotic obsession disorder. Why so sore? Did I insult you in my text? And why hide behind childish pseudonyms? So you can say everyone is full of crap.
Even the left leaning readers that come on this site come to discuss, not to sound off mindless rhetoric. I suggest you go back to your little world of one sentence soundbites where you can obsess about OSM, construct blogspot sites in their name, and link to every other jerk who does the same. Very interesting and fulfilling life you have. You just keep on trucking Punko right out of here and back to your sandpit looking for that old fedora. That's right, I am not linking that one.
Posted by: Alexandra | Sunday, November 20, 2005 at 03:18 PM
Oh crap, looks like Den the Pez finally spilled all the beans, and you know what? He is entirely sympathetic. RLS looks like he's full o' crap, like the cobag that he is, and DtP, while quite shrill, is entirely a more believable character. Keep on truckin!

Very well deserved nomination for Alexandra.

I'll be back with a lengthy male persp. after I finish my morning constitutional; wrestling with two full grown bengal tigers.

So what? You think this is a site where I censor people's conversations? As you obviously don't know Jim's work and I DO, I still say "...brave and talented. PERIOD"
If you didn't use the word p.... so much in your own post writing, I could ask you to come and censor some more of my links.
Are you one of those people that think that Michelle Malkin is responsible for all the sins of the Filipino female population? When someone says the word 'Filipino prostitute' I don't think of Michelle Malkin who is an accomplished journalist and a married mother. If you do it's your problem buddy.
Posted by: Alexandra | Saturday, November 19, 2005 at 12:26 AM
You realize that the post that you linked to from Jim Lowney ("Brave and talented PERIOD.") concludes with the opinoin that the only person at the OSM event who was actually open and had a clear business plan was a filipino hooker.
isnt Malkin filipino?

Alexandra, Just returned from Instapundit. As Kenny said, go to archives there. We're provided with a search box. I typed in 'Yahoo in China' and enjoyed an absolute avalanche of information. SO much to choose from. I suppose we could be next. Look forward to reading your take on the issue.
Posted by: jess1dering | Friday, November 18, 2005 at 01:35 AM
Siggy thank you, coming from you that's a real compliment PERIOD.
Kenny, I am going to check it out, I am on my commie bashing crusade today....Where are you I've missed your comments...
Kim and Kristen, I am sorry you had the cold shoulder, it's going to be a while until we can somehow interlock the outside and the inside world, (by that I mean the intellect with how we look externally) which is what I try to do with my weblog design, my photographs and the content. And although presently is a little too politically heavy, will digress if I can slightly free myself from the grip of politics, which has had me in an arm lock all my life. I did it with Chief Justice Roberts' nomination, where I did a piece on his Cary Grant North by Northwest style. The resistance is there on both sides, believe me this is not a one sided snub, but we'll nudge that forward in time. I get some preconceived notions because of the Warhol photograph of myself, but generally the blog gets incredibly good reception and the art mixed with current affairs and politics, is a good start for bridging the divide, as long as there is some common ground somewhere to hold onto.
Yehudit, you haven't met me, but I have followed your blog with interest and admiration, and liked the articles and your clear and succinct presentation of your thoughts. Something I still aspire to, as my length gets more like Jeff Goldstein's without the power of his expression. As I said I live in hope, it's in my genes, I simply need to locate it, and master it. BTW, don't you think the funniest part is Jeff Goldstein recounting in one of his updates how he was in a headlock conversation that he couldn't wait to get out of about whether Christ was a Libertarian.....I love Jeff he makes me laugh AND he makes me READ these huge passages of his.
SoE, for you to say anything is truly exciting, I am thrilled. The biggest critic of all....THAT'S COOL

Alexandra, Thank goodness for Kenny. I hadn't a clue where I read that bit of info. about Yahoo in China. I was planning to read posts here and then begin wracking my brain. Whew, I'm glad Ken could provide us with what we needed. I will go and fetch us some links, though. Also , I think abandoning the Pajamas name is a huge mistake. OSM is so generic and so lacking in daring and originality. And think of how much easier it would be, not to mention more FUN, to remember a name that has "pajamas" in it. Especially for future generations who study " The Impact of the Internet on Revolutionizing Society , Government and All Things Known to Man." :) Is it a done deal or can we perhaps convince them....

Alexandra,
Instapundit's been complaining more or less incessantly about Microsoft's and Yahoo's spineless collaboration with the Chinese government. Going through his archives and following the links should get you well on your way.

Wow, that vonM photoshop grows on me from day to day! I agree that MM is hilarious! (note to NxN below)
Now about the incorporated conflict. A departed friend of mine (died tragically in a huge accident in Uruguay) once told me that he landed a corporate position because of chance events. After lengthy interviews he was preparing to leave a corporate office tower when suddenly police arrived to grab him. Seems that he fit the description of a lunatic who was just reported to city dispatch for sneaking into the complex and changing the nameplates on office doors. Later it was learned that the call to city dispatch was fake, which is probably a misdemeanor (btw). As a result of the confusion the departed friend was suddenly the object of curiosity within the company. This surely helped get his resume onto the many needed desks for review. The caller was never identified but he spoke with a South American accent.
NxN, Do you really take all of that seriously ....¿
Hey! Who thinks that blogjam is the coolest thing!!? I guess it isn't an original idea but I haven't seen one before. What I truly like though was how agitprop was confronted by parody. I.E. Global warming is causing the car fires in France. Heeelarious!
Now that was the obvious stuff at OSM.ORG. We will all become graduate students of reading between the lines!
How exciting!

Hi Alexandra, thanks so much for the compliments toward us outcasts on the fashion panel. I see you found the picture from Yahoo News (and although I think I look horrid, it is always nice to discover one's picture in the news).
A reader on my site called Elizabeth Hayt a "scolding schoolmarmish prig." Indeed the Internet can be mean!

I JUST GOT NOMINATED FOR BEST DESIGNED BLOG @ THE WEBLOG AWARDS, BY THE EVER GALLANT ANTIMEDIA....THANKS PAUL. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW UNTIL IT WAS ON MY STATS.
OK CALIFORNIA CONSERVATIVE I ADMIT I AM CHUFFED...HEH.

Thanks for the kind words! I thought the second panel was really great. Even Elizabeth Hayt pointed out that the internet could be so mean. I mean, we were invited, we did not crash and then hold the stage hostage.
Posted by: kim | Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 07:46 AM
If we are to believe Jeff Goldstein's live-blogging comments, Alexandra's picture is way off the mark. Here we see a bunch of like-minded friends (at least in the fashion sense) having a ball. All participate, all contribute, all are having a genuinely fun time.
Apperently not so at young OSM....
Not my favorite kind of company. Drunk or no drunk... Can't stand this type of pseudo-cool crap!
Posted by: North by Northwest | Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 05:35 AM
Jess, can you give me more info on the China Syndrome please, I'd like to post something. Need to research it though. It may be a little out of context in the sense that they may be researching for names on Yahoo, then subpoenaing them (or using other pressure) to hand over furhter info. This is what happens in communist countries unfortunately, and Yahoo must have a presence there which it needs to uphold.
Posted by: Alexandra | Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 04:24 AM
Chris,
That's such a COOL comment coming from you! Needless to say you ARE the major duomo. I am now doing one of those bowing gestures with my arms outstretched that Madonna did when Barbara Streisand walked in on the Oprah show.
Thanks, that's made my day.

That 'painting's great.
Posted by: chris Muir | Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 01:19 AM
By the way, Yahoo seems to be censoring posts in this country and actually turning "dissidents" names and addresses over to the gov.'t in China, which has led to citizen arrests. Chilling, isn't it?
Posted by: jess1dering | Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at 11:39 PM
Oh Glory, Glory an answer to prayer!!!! I humbly request one concise and printable publication a day. Preferably one that debunks the current most heinous lie by the MSM. I offer myself in service to you, as printer and distributer (aka. foot-soldier) of truth........glorious truth !! Can't you just see free, true news being distributed on every corner of this great land ? Ahhh, it's about time someone made an effort to take our country back from the Lunatic Liberal MSM. BUT, please save some profit for back-up, other means of communication because the free internet is a light that you KNOW the forces of evil (aka deciet and control) will be dying to put out.

PJMedia would have been better than OSM or Pajamas Media
Posted by: Huan | Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at 09:01 PM
Yeah, Pajamas is sort of a cool name. I can see why they changed it though; Roger & co. want the new organization to be taken seriously, and Pajamas Media, catchy though it is, is a decidedly frivolous name.
Of course, Google is a frivolous name, and they sure are taken seriously.
What now? I suppose that depends on the course of action taken by the existing Open Source Media. If they decide to sue, then OSM nee Pajamas is in a world of trouble.
Probably the best course of action would be for the old OSM and the new OSM to join forces.
Posted by: Ed Minchau | Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at 07:31 PM
Ed, so what now? Perhaps they will have to change it again, personally I loved Pajamas Media, but I guess it wasn't serious enough.
You'll laugh at this...in the early hours of this morning when I wrote my post I spent ages looking for a picture with men in pajamas having a pillow fight, and I found some really good ones...only to discover a couple of hours later that the name was going to be different.
Don't you think Pajamas Media was actually a very cool name?
Posted by: Alexandra | Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at 06:07 PM
Hey Juliette, are you having fun at the launch? You are right, stick close to Jeff....
Thanks a4g I like your new layout btw. Parchment letters, looks really good, I meant to tell you...
Posted by: Alexandra | Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at 05:50 PM
Even though it is OSM's first day, they already have a problem - a big one. The name "Open Source Media" is taken and the preexisting company has been incorporated and in operation since May. A lawsuit over the name is not the way to start a new company, and could have been avoided with 10 seconds at Google.
