Iran is blocking news from leaking out about the current student unrests and bloody riots on University campuses throughout the country. This however is no excuse for the Western media, who have shamefully ignored the tens if thousands of Iranians protesting against the regime. We should take note:
Iranian security forces fired live bullets, and shots were fired at homes outside the university. One of the students told Rooz: "The university campus is on fire, raids are being conducted throughout the campus, and the students are in fear and anxiety... Gunfire is heard from all directions... There is blood everywhere". The university's telephone lines were reported to have been cut.
Iran Press Service (IPS) reports, that "the new wave of students unrests started a month ago when, on the proposal of Mr. Ahmadi Nezhad [our Thug-In-Chief of course], the government decided to burry remains of “martyrs” of the Iraq-Iran War in the campuses of universities across the nation."
The "enemy", for the Iranian ruling officials is, besides the "Great American Satan" the dynamic, active, prosperous Iranian Diaspora with which Mr. Ahmadi Nezhad, on advises [sic] from the leader, is trying to cut all links.
This isn't just a small band of unruly students. As soon as you are talking about 75% of the entire student body participating in the protests, you have some credible momentum.
Independent sources on the scene said 3,000 of the 4,000 students attending the main campus, and another 2,000 from the law and political science campus were taking part in the protests.
Not surprising, is the Mullahs' attempt to blame the unrest "on trouble-makers disguised as students; [...] the ultra-conservative daily “Kayhan”, a mouthpiece of Ayatollah Khameneh’i, called the student leaders "representatives of the American Congress in Tehran University" and said that the “rioters” had come from outside the university"; [...] "foreign agents" and “professional trouble-makers getting orders from the enemies”.
Is it premature to hope for a realistic chance for a peaceful regime change from within Iran? Does it matter that the Mullahs refuse to "accept the fact that the regime is unpopular and the rulers discredited"? Let us hope they stand a chance of at least shaking the mothballs off this crazy regime, hell bent on destruction, endangering the security of the population and the integrity of the nation, on a collision course with the West in the name of Islam.
Our darling of the Blogosphere, the talented Gateway Pundit has been all over this story for some time, putting the MSM to shame, and has a brilliant round up here, here and here.
Amir Taheri is also worth a read on why parts of Iran are beyond Ahmadinejad's reach.
The United States will join European leaders in their talks with Iran on its nuclear program if Iran stops enriching uranium.
"To underscore our commitment to a diplomatic solution and to enhance prospects for success, as soon as Iran fully and verifiably suspends its enrichment and reprocessing activities, the United States will come to the table," the secretary said in remarks delivered at the State Department.
Ed Morrissey is live blogging:
This really doesn't change much except for an American offer to join direct, multilateral talks based on a condition that the Iranians have already said they won't meet. It does provide an effective response to Ahmadinejad's latest PR campaign and puts the onus back on Teheran for progress. I suspect that was the entire purpose of this statement.
Obviously imposing conditions is appropriate, although it seems rather superfluous, as they have absolutely no intention of stopping the uranium enrichment. I guess some sort of communication is necessary, if for no other reason but to show that at least we are prepared to try. "Meanwhile, Iran is preparing for our invasion." and "For the military option to remain viable, the U.S. must exhaust all diplomatic options and this seems like a logical extension of that."
The diplomatic offer is already rejected by Iran, declaring it "propaganda", quelle surprise.... The "containment strategy has clearly been shifted", but the answer clearly lies in our support for Chapter VII:
U.S. engagement and pursuing a Chapter VII resolution by securing guarantees from Russia and China is not a choice between mutually exclusive routes; they must compliment one another. Regardless of the acceptance or rejection of the preconditions, U.S. willingness to join the EU-3 dialogue accompanied by a package of incentives to be finalized in the coming days, warrants the support of Moscow and Beijing. If unanimous P-5 support for a Chapter VII resolution is secured as a result of this move, then it deserves our support.
Are we playing the end game? Whilst I may believe that we are out of time, Josh is convinced we are already too late.
My friend, Reza Pahlavi II, the eldest son of the late Shah of Iran, goes on the offense. The power struggle continues.

The problem of the Middle-East and Palestine is the HOLO-HOAX as described hereto:

Thank you for your wonderful site!!! It's so easy for me to see now why the internet will wipe out the newspapers, . . . this from a once die-hard daily paper reader!!!!! I will send this to my local liberally controlled paper and see what they do re: their total ignoring of this powerful story of enslaved people valiantly fighting for their freedom while liberals purposefully look away so they won't "feel" like they have to do anything, to help their fellow human beings from being murdered by totalitarians.
I am ashamed of once having been a liberal. Now, they are like the people who stand by and watch a neighbor woman being beaten to death by a drunk husband, saying they didn't want to "interfere"; when actually, they were afraid, happy to sacrifice their neighbor's life, just so they could do nothing . . . and feel safer! . . . Knowing full well a 911 call will bring the police far too late, but in their cowardice they just call 911.
We Americans let the liberals murder the hopes of the People of Vietnam last time around. This time we must not only defeat, but completely destroy the Islamofascists, for the good of the world, but most specifically, for the good of the people of the Middle East. The liberals, here in the U.S. and Europe are the greatest enemies to the Hopes, Dreams and the Good of the People of Iraq, Iran and the whole Middle East!
The Islamofacsists bluntly say what they want by killing who they kill. The liberals pontificate from the pulpits of their media-university churches their marxist theology which sacrifices the many to the control of the Maoist few, their elitist few. Their traitorous lies are more dangerous than Islamofascist bombs, to the Middle Eastern people.

Alexandra –
1. It seems that comments on various blogs regarding the WMD situation in Iran are very light. If a sense of futility and apathy has set in among even war bloggers then we're at a sorry pass. Have you seen a drop in emails and visits to these posts?
2. I think your treatment of the US decision to continue to jump through hoops to bring the Iranians to the table was incorrect. It seemed to me that you see it as a neutral and necessary act. I disagree. I think it must have been tremendously demoralizing to the opposition in Iran and showed us up as weak to the Muslims on the sidelines of the world. I tend to agree with Ledeen that this crisis is about the mullahs attempting to humiliate the West.
3. The articles of Gaffney (http://www.centerforsecuritypolicy.org/index.jsp?section=papers&code=06-F_12) and Rubin (http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=MDY4YzNjNGExZWQ4OTQwNjk0MGM2ODA5OTBmZmFiYWY= ) on the DoS establishment which seem to be driving the US negotiation focused strategy were helpful to me in understanding the back story. We’re a long way from “neo-cons” running U.S. foreign policy. I’d say we’re back to 9/10.
4. Very cool that you are buds with Reza II. There are advantages to visiting a blog/salon where the operator has connections in society. I hope that you’ll do an interview.

It appears that today's diplomatic outreach by President Bush has come to naught. But given the statements made by Ahmadinejad, Khameini, Hashemi-Rafsanjani and others, it was a longshot from the start.
Iran is bent on the destruction of Israel. All that remains is to see who draws first: Iran, Israel, or the United States.

Hi Alexandra,
Regarding the new diplomatic gambit with Iran, we have an interesting juxtaposition of desires, IMO.
On the one hand, we have Bush and the EU 3 desperately looking for a face saving way to make it look like they're handling things with Iran while keeping the oil flowing and giving the President time to exit Iraq, where he's largely been boxed in by Iran due to his failure to keep politicians with ties to the Mullahs out of government or stop Iran from funding and arming the Shai militias.
On the other, we have Iran, which needs to buy about 3 years tops to fully perfect in nuclear weapons and missle technology past the point of no return.
J O S H U A P U N D I T: The nuclear project Ahmadinejad didn't brag about
I've been predicting a `Munich moment' of this kind for quite some time.
In any event, agreements of convenience between Muslims and non-believers have no great significance for Muslims when it comes to establishing Dar Islam. The model is Mohammed's Treaty of Hubidiya, which lasted just long enough for Mohammed to garner the strength to massacre his `peace partners'. Or to put it another way, as the Hadith quotes Mohammed "War is deception."
I hope I'm wrong...

Boy, I say, boy, its all them outsahd agitators and northern jewboys comin' on down heah to rile up them as knew their place befoh
More seriously, as for conditions, the US telling the world we wil talk IF they give up enrichment and ONLY if the USSR and CHINA guarantee to act positively on sanctions if the Iranians do not give it all up...might help up opinion here for what must come later, but does anyone out there really care, or think that makes a difference? Especially in Qom?

Alexandra: The obvious advantage of this statement by the U.S. is that Iran is going to back out of negotiations, whining about their precious nukes - and it will effectively make the point that diplomacy is not really a viable option for those who want to solve this problem.
Of course, the rest of the world will miss the point completely, so they'll probably blame America for making demands on Iran. But we already knew that about them.
